Identification Needed
California permits the following forms of identification:
- California driver’s license or identification card
- United States passport book or passport card
- California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation inmate identification card, while the signer is in state prison custody
- Inmate identification issued by a sheriff’s department, while the signer is in local detention custody
- Valid foreign passport or valid consular identification document issued by the signer’s country of citizenship
- Driver’s license issued by another U.S. state or by an authorized Canadian or Mexican public agency
- Identification card issued by another U.S. state
- United States Armed Forces identification card
- Employee identification card issued by the State of California or a California city, county, or city and county
- Identification card issued by a federally recognized tribal government
ID requirements
Identification must be current or issued within the last five years. Certain IDs must also include a photograph, physical description, signature, and serial or other identifying number.
If you do not have one of these IDs, California law may allow qualified credible witnesses to establish identity. Please call before your appointment to discuss that option. Final acceptance is determined after the original identification is inspected.

A Notary Public or other Officer completing this certificate verifies only the identity of the individual who signed the document to which this certificate is attached, and not the truthfulness, accuracy, or validity of that document.
California notaries cannot prepare, select, or explain legal documents; determine which notarial act you need; or provide legal advice. Questions about the document or your legal rights should be directed to a qualified attorney or the document’s issuing agency.
